Robert Traina
In March 2005, I went to San Juan, Puerto Rico for work. Since I had never been to PR before, a bunch of the local guys from my company decided to take me out for a night in Old San Juan. At one point in the night everybody started packing up to head to a different bar. We began walking down the narrow streets of the old city and ended up turning down a dark, dirty alleyway. We came upon an old green door. Naturally, I was very confused and apprehensive about where we were and what type of place we were about to enter.
As the door swung open the strange music from inside spilled out from the club into the alleyway. Making my way into the club, I noticed all these people dancing with expressions of excitement. The dance floor was packed to the corners with couples spinning, swinging, and executing various forms of hand motions to the beat of the music. I turned to my friend and asked, “What is this place?” He responded, “This is salsa my friend!”, and I was hooked immediately!
Upon my return, I came across the article for IntoSalsa in the Nuvo. I went downtown to check out the studio during a class and meet Yang and Erin. I decided to start taking classes at the Red Room. I remember the first day I showed up for the first class. I chuckled to myself walking up to the Red Room because the feeling I had was the same as in PR only this time the door was red. Since then, I've had the pleasure of learning from Yang, Erin, and the rest of the wonderful people from the Indy Salsa Community. I can always count on warm welcomes and friendly smiles whenever I attend a salsa venue. Interacting and dancing with everyone has allowed me to become a better dancer. I've progressed through all levels of the classes and have just recently begun the Performance Class. I enjoy learning new Salsa moves and patterns. To me, the beat of the music evokes feelings of happiness and excitement. Salsa has and will continue to create the same excitement for me as the first day I saw it.
