Michael Quiñones
First I would like to say that I am Michael Javier
Quiñones Muñiz, and I am a Salsaholic. I have gone three
steps without doing a right turn hook turn, that is a big accomplishment
for me and I am very proud. Now Lets see how I get started with salsa
(picture a flash back screen in black and at this point). I came from
the island that started it all - PUERTO RICO and it did not help that
my mom was a big salsa dancer. Therefore, when we moved to Indiana she
would go out to dance and back in the day I was a big mama's boy so
I would go with her every time I got the chance. She would teach me
at home the basics and the little stuff to keep me out of trouble at
parties. She would always say things like, girls like guys that can
dance salsa or you will get a Power Ranger toy if you dance salsa, so
I would get all excited and I would try my hardest to get the moves
right. Little by little, I started picking moves up from the street
and videos (youtube is good for that) and I would also take advantage
of the Latin Fiestas every September and I would get free lessons from
whoever was up on stage. So eventually, I started to dance more and
more. However, I did not really understand the whole counting your steps
until I met Ken Howard and that's when I really started getting in to
it. Ken gave lesson for an activity I put together at Rolls-Royce and
I learned exact footwork. Throughout the whole night I had CJ and Ken's
attention they were like wow he can move. So Ken came up to me and asked
me to be his padawan. I agreed and we have been dancing against the
Forces of the dark side since. We started a group called the Indy Salsaholics,
which is now getting back together. We have a current chapter at Marion
College and working on the one at IUPUI, Butler is next. So this is
the story of how me Michael Javier Quiñones Muñiz became
a Salsaholic. Oh and one more thing
I LOVE SALSA.
