Bobby Lam
It all started one night at the Jazz Kitchen back in December of 2004.
A close friend, Alisha, took me there for Latin Night and I experienced
Salsa music & dance for the first time. I can't say I took to dancing
naturally. I can't say I'm comfortable around large crowds either, but
something about it started drawing me towards it (besides Alisha dragging
me out on salsa nights). There is something about the music that makes
you forget about everything else and just enjoy the moment. And the
dancing, the energy, and the style from the dance makes it seem almost
like a fantasy of an idealized world - two people moving in unison through
the rise and fall of the music, communicating without words, like an
extension of the music itself. As the year came to a close, I was resolved
to learn Salsa in the New Year. I signed up for lessons with IntoSalsa
in January and they've been helping me ever since.
Teaching me to dance is like teaching a penguin to fly and every time
I dance with someone new, it's like learning to dance all over because
it can feel so different with different people (I apologize to all those
who had to suffer through my blundering process). I still have a lot
to learn. Luckily, all the wonderful people I've met in the Salsa community
have been very supportive and I thank all the IntoSalsa instructors
I've had past & present (Yang, Erin, Cynthia, Tracy, Nivanka) for
their patience and advice in helping me improve.
