Savannah Smith

...from Swing to Salsa...

I was first introduced to Salsa through Swing dancing when I was asked to be part of a Swing exhibition at the First Annual Salsa Competition at the Red Room. I stayed for the evening trying to learn to Salsa, but Swing was too fresh on the brain. It was difficult to leave the single rock-step behind! Feeling unsuccessful, I didn't return to Salsa dancing until I was eating at Adobo Grill in November of 2006 and they started clearing the tables awayfor Salsa dancing. I thought I could just blend in, finish my meal, and watch all of the dancers, but I was wrong... people kept asking me to dance. I tried to forewarn them that I had no idea what I was doing, but they persisted and I didn't sit down the entire night. Merengue and Bachata were quick to
learn for a beginner, but Salsa was tough for this "Swing"er. So, I just kept coming back to all the friendly and forgiving faces and once I was invited to the Vault for the Saturday night party, I was hooked! I never missed a Friday or Saturday night of Salsa until my summer in Italy and since then I have been a faithful Salsera! I am thankful to everyone I have danced with for teaching me what I know about Salsa!

I'll see you every Saturday night at El Meson! ¿Quieres bailar?
