Lolita Smith
My name is Lolita Miranda-Smith. I am
42 yrs.old, divorced and a mother of 3 beautiful children. I am a registered
pediatric nurse working as a Care Coordinator at Riley Children's Hospital.
I have Filipino descent, a Spanish name and a strong faith in Christ.
My love for dancing began in my early childhood. I took tap and jazz
classes. As a young teen, My dad would listen to big band music and
taught me how to dance East Coast Swing/ Jitterbug. In college, I enrolled
in Ballroom Dancing 101. I was completely captivated by the various
dances: waltz, fox trot, rumba, swing, nightclub two-step...I was asked
to join the IU Red steppers as a walk on. My desire to learn dance has
only escalated as time has passed.
I was introduced to the Salsa community about 2 1/2 yrs. ago. One Thursday
night, a group of my friends decided to go to the Jazz Kitchen for dinner
and live jazz music. However, we were surprised when Latin music started
and a free Salsa lesson was offered. I listened to the different songs
trying to distinguish which dance went with what type of music...salsa
vs. bachata vs. reggaeton. Two weeks went by before I finally asked
someone to dance with me. I boldly, and very poorly attempted to try
my salsa skills out socially. A very wise friend/instructor told me
to dance with as many men who asked and learn to follow their lead.
I would like to encourage beginners to follow the same advice. As time
went on, I took intermediate salsa lessons with Yang and Erin. I also
joined a performing Rueda dance team under the instruction of Juan Garcia.
Salsa dancing has opened up opportunities to experience true cultural
diversity. I have met so many wonderful people from all over the world!
I feel blessed to have attended Salsa/Rueda Congresses in Miami, Fla.,
Atlanta, GA., Chicago, IL. Indianapolis may be considered a small sleeping
city, but we are growing and the dance scene is thriving! So for all
of you guys that want to meet women...take advantage of dance lessons.
Women, remember to accept dance invitations graciously! I look forward
to sharing the dance floor with you in the very near future.
