Kendra Stinson

I'm that girl.

You know, the girl who dances in her car.  The girl who put on shows for her parents when she was younger. . . and who coerced her brothers and sisters to join.  The girl who will dance in the aisle of any store just because she hears a song that she likes; the beat makes her do it.

For as long as I can remember, I've loved to move, and when my grandma encouraged me to go to a dance class, I became enthralled with the world of dance.  I learned the basics of so many dances from the class that bewitched me:  waltz, foxtrot, tango, polka, salsa and so much more.  My first time out at a salsa club was The Vault.  My friends and I danced salsa steps to every song we heard. . . bachata, merengue, cha-cha. . . it didn't matter.  We were in love with our newly learned salsa steps and we were determined to use them.

Over the summer I decided to take an actual salsa class.  I never left.  Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me and guided me and not yelled at me for stepping on their toes or for getting so dizzy that they had to physically stop me from crashing into the wall.  I have learned so much and what I love most is that I get to keep learning new ways to move.  I have really enjoyed learning both On1 and On2.  Although On2 has been a struggle, learning to dance on a different beat has helped me grow.

When I travel, one of the things that I look forward to is trying out that area's salsa clubs.  I'm becoming notorious for taking my friends salsa dancing.  Salsa is a second language for me.  I don't have to be able to speak the same language as my partner to dance.  I just need to know the steps.  I consider it to be a compliment when I've danced with someone new in a different locale and they say, "Wow! Where did you learn to dance?"

I'm that girl.  You know, that salsera from Indianapolis.
