Katie Bisordi

I've been dancing ever since I could move! My mom has videos and pictures of me as a baby bopping and hopping around to any tune that was playing so I know it's true! Although I don't think I can attribute any genetic dancing talent to my parents, I do have my mother to thank for getting me out on the dance floor. She started taking me to tap and ballet (and later jazz) lessons when I was just three years old and kept taking me for as long as I wanted to lace up my shoes – which ended up being right through the end of high school. I stopped taking formal lessons and participating in tap and ballet once I started college because I didn't have the time or means to continue. Besides parties and dancing to anything good on the radio, I had traded in my dance shoes for an oar, boat, and early morning practices. I was on the crew team all four years of college and rowing became my new passion and athletic activity. I have always loved being active and moving and exercising in some way and rowing was what moved me through college.

A year after graduating, I moved from my life-long home in New York out here to Indianapolis for graduate school. One Saturday in February, my friend called me up to say her and some other people from our graduate program were going to a walk-in salsa lesson at a Latin dance studio downtown. I was a bit hesitant only because I wasn't dressed for the public eye and I was running an experiment (yes, I know I'm a big science nerd!), but my friend assured me I would be back in time to finish and she was already outside in the car waiting to pick me up, so I went. I can't adequately describe how happy I am that I went that day. One step and I realized how much I had missed dancing during the last five years. I even started taking Salsa Belly dancing lessons! Learning salsa, meringue, and bachata has definitely been a huge challenge for me because I'm not the one in charge of the steps and I don't know what is coming next, but this is a challenge that has been immensely rewarding. Besides finding a fantastic outlet for my energy, of both the excited and frustrated kind, I've also been blessed with the opportunity to meet a truly wonderful group of people and I've made great new friends. Yang, Erin, Brooke, and Nikki have been incredible teachers inside and out of class - thank you! And of course, I cannot forget all of the other great salseros who have taught me through practice and dancing at the studio, Red Room, and El Meson. Their patience with my goof-ups and enthusiasm with showing me new steps has helped improve my skill and increase my love for my new-found passion. This has definitely been one of the best parts about moving to Indy!

The Eagles sang, “some dance to remember, some dance to forget.” I dance to smile, laugh, and have a fabulous time! =)
