Chloe Lin
Excited, curious, but also anxious… these were the feelings I had when I first went to Jazz Kitchen last summer (2007). The music was beckoning me to dance, but I really did not know how to do it. I never thought I would be too shy to dance but when I witnessed that crowded dance floor filled with bodies tangling and untangling to the beat of the alluring music with countless twists and turns, I was both mesmerized and intimidated. But thanks to the many wonderful and generous dancers that I met that day (and with whom I have since become friends), I was taught the basic steps and encouraged to explore the dance to make it my own.
My dance experience can be traced back to a few years of ballet when I was in grade school and 10 years of hi-impact steps aerobics dance before moving to Indianapolis in 2005. I have always loved to dance. And when I encountered Salsa on that fateful Thursday night, I knew it would be a dance I would want to embrace. The music and the movements, the rhythm and the patterns… it was like a long lost love coming into my life.
Now I go to dance at least twice a week. And it is all the more special because I can share my love of dance with my husband, who was never interested in dancing. As I think about all the months that have gone by since last summer, what I'm amazed with is the way in which Salsa brings so many people of such diverse ages and backgrounds together to the same space. Here I am, one year later, writing this journal entry. Who knows, you could be next! In the meantime, see you on the dance floor!
