Chimere Cross

In college my friend Angel took me to a latin night at the a club formally know as Club Mecca. We were out to celebrate her birthday. I didn't knwo anything about salsa. When I got there, there were not a lot of people. At this time, salsa was newly introduced to Indianapolis. I watched and it was cool. Angel introduced me to an instructor named Douglas. Everyone called him "T". Even though I didn't know what I was doing, he tried to teach me right there in the club. I picked it up pretty quickly and he offered to teach me lessons for free at the Red Brick Dance studio. It's one thing to watch people doing salsa and it's another thing to physically do it. Once I picked it up that night, I fell in love with it. I took lessons with him for about 4-5 months and then ended up leaving the salsa community because of issues between the instructor and I. I stopped dancing for 4 1/2 years. So sad! But I couldn't stay away forever. I decided to get back into salsa back in August of 2005. That's when I started to learn more advanced stuff at Indysalsa. After a month of dancing at Indysalsa, I became an assistant for one of the instructors. Thanks to Mathias and my good friend, Marques, I've become a better dancer. I left Indysalsa in April of 2006 yet again because of issues with an instructor, but this time I wasn't going to leave the salsa community. At this point, I was in love with salsa and decided to continue my quest to become the best dancer that I can be. Now, I just social dance and practice with a few advanced salsa dancers. And thanks to Ryan my spins have improved a lot as well as my ability to follow.

I love dancing to latin music, especially salsa. And when people see me dance they can see my passion for it. I vow to never again let some man keep me from dancing salsa. I missed out on over 4 years of salsa because of it and it p*sses me off just thinking about it. That is my advice to anyone one that comes into the salsa comminity. Don't stop dancing salsa because of issues that you had with someone from your past that you have had a bad relationship with even though you know that you are going to see them out in the clubs or at socials. Just keep your head up and keep dancing.
