Welcome to Salsa
and the City! This is a monthly column
by Erin about
Salsa in the Circle City. Salsa has become a lifestyle for some of us:
music, dance, parties, fashion, travel, friends, relationships, and,
did I say dance? For those who are addicted to Salsa, this is a place
where you can read about what's going on in the city, and share your
ideas, comments, and gossip. Erin has been a regular of Indy's Salsa
scene since 1999.
No More Drama
by Erin
Lamb
posted November 21, 2006
Normally, I don't like to involve myself in petty gossip or drama -
on any level. However, after this last week or two I feel it is necessary
for me, and Yang, to address some of the terrible rumors that have been
circulating the Latin dance community.
First, I have been confronted several times this past few weeks about
a supposed personal hatred between IntoSalsa and Taz. Not True. IntoSalsa
and DJ Taz went their separate ways due to business reasons, not personal
reasons. I do not "hate" TaZ because he is at the Cozy. More
power to him! He is passionate about his parties and his music. I do
not deny anybody their right to do what they think is best for their
career. I support Taz in his endevours as I hope he supports ours.
The truth is that the crowds that go to the two different clubs on Saturdays
are very different. They have very different opinions on what they like
and why they like it. It could be taste in music, taste in venue, the
location of ones friends, etc. But who cares! As long as everyone is
having a good time there is no need for "anyone to get their panties
in a knot." We should just be happy that the Latin music scene
is thriving here in our Midwestern metropolis.
In addition, I did not write, "How
Erin Lost her Groove" about Taz. Yes, Taz and I have had several
disagreements about music, but they were friendly and respectful disagreements.
I wrote that article because I felt the Latin music being played in
the majority of the Latin venues had gotten poor in its selections.
All the DJs took my comments in good nature; and as a result, I feel
that the music in Indianapolis has improved quite a bit. Those of you
who jumped to conclusions about Taz only ended up insulting him by assuming
it was him.
In connection with that statement, I will tell everyone now that any
foul text message that may have been sent to anyone associated with
the Cozy is not backed by IntoSalsa. Yang and I do not support nor perpetuate
any drama that exists between members of the Vault or the Cozy. We are
members of the same community and any comment made towards one hurts
the other end as well.
I hope this ends any drama that has developed in the past month. The
holidays are here and I'm not interested in the negative vibe that have
been circulating the scene lately. The end.

I agree. Enough of the bullshxx going around. The
Salsa community has 2 places to go on Saturday night that are classy.
For the patrons the locations are within the same block and some go to
both places. Some like 1 venue more than the and others like the music
at 1 place more than the other. Let's bury the hatchet and dance the Holidays
away. As far as the text message that was sent the issue has been addressed.

As someone who is absolutley, completely new to
salsa (I just took my first lesson tonight), I am a bit confused and surprised
that there seems to even be drama involved in this whole scene. Am I missing
something? I thought learning salsa dancing would be such a fun, interesting
and healthy thing to embrace but now I am beginning to wonder...I can
understand that something that is so passionate in and of itself would
illicite passionate feelings, but to have these feelings get in the way
of enjoying oneself just seems to undermine the whole concepts of feeling
free and self-accepting that I though dancing was supposed to help us
all with. I truly want to enjoy the salsa culture here in Indianapolis
and I hope the negativity I seem to be sensing is just coming from a small
part of the salsa community. I want to escape from the troubles of my
life through dance and not experience more because of it.
- SAC
It's good to see an effort being made to end the
"drama". I enjoy both locations and both DJ's and cannot say
I swear an alligience to one or another. Having this negative vibe in
the air really does affect the amount of fun I have on a Saturday night.
I think it is nice that the clubs are close and people can frequent both,
I just wish you guys would get together and offer a discount on cover
charges to people who want to go back and forth.
- firegrrl
The only way to address any issue is with respect
and communication. Erin, thank you for directly addressing rumors and
questions. Guaranteed, no one person knows all the details because there
are too many sides involved here. I have attended both "parties"
and I do have a preferred, but that doesn't mean that I boycott the other.
We each prefer specific venues to others due to a variety of reasons.
Indianapolis is lucky to not only have two venues, but two venues within
walking distance of each other. We have created more room for our community
to grow. Let's enjoy and quit complaining.... just dance.
- dance not drama
Talking about drama, I am personnally disappointed
by the childish attitude of some of the VIP crew members: they seem to
only talk to people that go to the Vault and ignore people that decide
to go to the Cozy. They should remember that the Vault existed before
them, and can exist without them.
- Saturday Night Dancer
HILARIOUS! hehehehehe.
- the Mojo
Wow! Such drama...I've been out of the scene a
long while--I'm just glad to know there are more places to go to dance
salsa. Good for you Erin for saying your piece or should I say...your
peace. Come on people...the holidays are near.
- Anonymous
Don't worry about people. like butt holes every
one has one. lol, you go girl. you are the friendliest person i have met.
you and Yang welcome me when this thing got started and i thank you. hope
to see you soon again. keep on kepping on. ciao, mami.
- indiandoll
Lets end the drama because people don't understand
what happened. People try to get people to take sides without people fully
understanding all that's going on. SATURDAYNIGHTDANCER I'm sorry that
you feel that we only speak to those who go to TheVault, in my personal
view we try to make friends and talk to everyone. If I've missed talking
to someone it's not because you have a choice of venue. I try to talk
to everyone the same. As far as the text that was sent...they never told
you that there was an apology text sent the very next day. Only the negative
text is circulating the scene but no the apology. Drama ends here...let's
all dance and have fun...and if you enjoy both venues, then visit both.
- Gino from The VIP
hello to you all, this crack me up, i have been
looking for a place to go dancing for the last six months, i am puertorriquen,
what so funny i have not even been to either places and you guys don't
even know me, but i do have to say we are adults not in high school. i
just love to dance and yeah! the holidays are just here, why so much drama,
just wash it away and let dance.
- fantastica
Hi Sweetie (Erin).. WOW! I am reading this AFTER
our Wed. at the VAULT where Taz and other friends were there! I felt the
atmosphere was really friendly and like ol times when all of our Salsa
adventures got started. Sure i got snips of talk about the two venues
and "rumors" about bad mouthing Taz, but in all it was loving
and warm. I do hope your article stops alot of this stupid bickering.
All just love the music and the joy it brings. Thanks for taking the time
to read this...PEACE AND LOVE all! *smiles*.
- Papi J
Good article Erin, that is what salsa lovers needed
after a few bitter incidents. Thank you. Especially this time of the year,
we all need to get together and enjoy not only the music and dancing,
having each other too. Be safe and happy!
- Bensu
I like your article cause you are trying to stay
fair to everybody but I think that you should know that your being too
fair to DJ TaZ. I have been going to the latin parties for a long time.
I go to both the Cozy and the Vault parties too but the last few times
I have gone out DJ TaZ is going around talking to everybody and talking
nothing but trash. When I go to parties, I just want to have fun. I don't
want someone to cry in my ear all night.
- Anonymous
I agree with the first anonymous. I went to the
party at The Vault last Wednesday (great party might I add) and Dj Taz
came up to me and was telling me a bunch of stupid and pitty things. I
wanted to have fun but he was not making it easy. I ordered a few drinks
for friends and I as he kept bugging me and kept asking me to go to The
Cozy - all this while he was drunk. AND if I may...I had been visiting
both clubs but because of childish acts like that, when I do go out Saturdays
now, I will make my way to The Vault. Go cry to your mother or someone
else but quit bothering us (Salsa and Latin music lovers) with all your
whining. Thanks for the article Erin....lets all go dancing and work off
that wonderful Turkey we ate over the holiday. PLEASE PEOPLE - STOP THE
DRAMA. TAZ HAS A DECENT PARTY AND SO DOES INTOSALSA WITH THE VIP GUYS!
- Anonymous2
Anonymous 1 and 2, now look who's bitching! Why
didn't you just say this to Taz to his face right then and there when
it was presently bothering you, instead of broadcasting it on the internet
and causing more drama? Not that being drunk is an excuse for strange
behavior, but we all know how people get when they have a few too many
drinks. He's a business man and I can understand him advertising by word
of mouth to get some money put in his pocket and keep The Cozy running
smoothly. And please don't assume that I am some buddy of Taz's. I don't
even know him, the VIP crew, or Yang and Erin. I just know of these people.
I'm a neutral person. I do feel all this pettiness needs to stop. This
is so ridiculous! All of you provide great services to the salsa community!
But from what I have seen, most of the drama in the salsa community is
either directly or indirectly involved with Intosalsa.
- Just pointing out the obvious
Well, "Pointing Out The Obvious"...What
makes you think something wasn't said to Taz that same Wednesday night?
As a matter of fact I did say something to Taz but he didn't stop (didn't
expect him to all liquored up). I moved away from him just so I didn't
have to listen to him. I agree with you on one of your statements, I do
believe that all 3 groups provide a great service to the Salsa community
and also taz is a good business man. However, I disagree that I "broadcasted"
any kind of drama or bitchyness about Taz, he does that on his own. I
simply made a comment and placed my opinion given the article that Erin
wrote. No one really knows when or why the drama started all people know
is that the drama is here. I won't assume that you're one of taz's buddies
but how would you feel if Taz, IntoSalsa or any of the vip guys were bothering
you talking trash about people when you're simply trying to enjoy the
night with friends? Don't be partial and don't take sides, just look at
it as a customer...personally as a customer I'd rather be left alone instead
of being bothered by a constant cry of "look at what they did to
me". BUT THEN AGAIN THAT'S JUST ME! IF YOU FEEL DIFFERENT, that's
your porogative.
- Anonymous2
Hello!!!! NO DRAMA!!! First of all, I'm really
good friends with Taz, and he doesn't talk any trash about the VIP crew
and IntoSalsa.... He is not in it for the money! He has plenty and only
cares about the people! So, shut up and quick all this stupid b*tching!
STOP ALREADY! And mainly, all this no grinding, I lost my groove and No
more drama should stay off the d*mn columns so we can focus on the love
of Salsa! Find something better to do with your free time! ummm... like
dancing! ;-)
- Stop it already!!!
Hi, "Stop it Already". you shouldn't
expect Taz to talk s*it about people to you if you're one of his good
friends. He already has your business, he doesn't need to gain your business
anymore. The people he talks to are the ones who are partial between the
vault and the cozy. HE DOES TALK S*IT ABOUT PEOPLE...YOU CAN'T TELL ME
HE DOESN'T BECAUSE HE WAS DOING IT IN MY EAR! I'm not partial - even after
all his bitching I'd still go to the cozy because I think it's a good
party but what he said won't make me stop going to the vault either. The
only thing I ask is that I be left alone and not talked to about any drama.
IntoSalsa or the vip guys don't ever come up to me and talk trash, they
come up to me and welcome me to their party and invite me to their next
party and that's it. I APPRECIATE THAT and not all the trash that Taz
talks...and HE DOES, you can't tell me what I heard - so quit taking sides
and see what's really going on. OPEN YOUR EYES AND OPEN YOUR EARS AND
LISTEN TO WHAT'S GOING ON!
- Anonymous2
Thank you so much, Erin and Yang for addressing
negativity in such a professional manner. I am just awed by this sudden
influx of drama. I always tell my hip hop friends that the reason I have
moved to the salsa scene is because there is no drama - only a group of
people who love to dance. I sure hope that this article brings clarity
and focus back to the salsa scene. Thanks again for your forthrighteousness
and love of the dance. Peace.
- Tiffany
......still so HILARIOUS!!!! LOL!!!! And quite
entertaining. ;-)
- the Mojo
Okay.... again.. let's stop all this drama. Anonymous2,
I don't really care what Taz said. It's obvious that you put your name
anonymous because you are either not tell the truth, or just part of IntoSalsa
or the VIP crew. Please, I'm asking again, that this drama be stopped.
Come on people, let's just dance.
- Stop it already!!!
I'm sorry to hear that there is (in-fighting) between
the two clubs. I hope this dispute is over and done with. I come down
from South Bend often to party "salsa" style with the Indy crowd.
We would be tickled silly to have "2" places to salsa. I think
it's great to travel between the 2 clubs. Keep it on the real Indy. Let's
all continue to have a good time, in and out of towners.......
- michele01
One or two incedents are not a reflection on someone(s)'s
personality, however I can't help but start to notice a pattern.
- Nick
Okay "Stop It Already"! I claim no strong
friendship/relationship/allegiance to either The Vip Crew or Intosalsa
and/or Taz. Unlike you, which by the way you haven't revealed your name
either but YOU DO CLAIM A STRONG FRIENSHIP WITH TAZ! So, obviously you
are one-sided and maybe don't see things the way they are being presented.
I've said it before and I'll say it again no one had approached me talking
trash about any one until Taz did it that Wednesday night at The Vault.
I'd really appreciated if the drama, crying and bitching was left out
of my ear...PLEASE!!!! I just want to dance, have a good time and enjoy
the city of Indianapolis! The smartest thing you've said is this...LETS
JUST DANCE! (I agree with you on that) I don't care much about the drama,
I simply ask that it's not in my ear and if it is and I ask you to move
away or stop, I expect you to be a respectful adult and STOP IT ALREADY
if I've asked to be left alone!!!! (I'm not directing that to you "stop
it already!!!!)
- Anonymous2
Okay, so i've been holding back and as i've been
reading comments from "stop it already" to "anonymous 2".
Here we go...i can see both point of views and both have strong arguments.
I agree with anonymous 2 if you want to be left alone, i think you should.
"stop it already" if you have strong ties to taz then you're
doing what a friend does and that's defend his actions (which is completely
understandable) i don't know who either one of you are but as long as
you guys keep going back and forth - you will never get any where because
you're obviously on opposite sides of the tracks! I appreciate the compliments
by anonymous 2 toward intosalsa and us (the vip crew) and just so you
know "stop it already" i honestly don't know who anonymous 2
is, so i can't say that he/she is telling the truth or is part of us!
If he/she was part of the vip crew there would be no "anonymous"
as the name...we tell people who we are and we state our opinions always
followed by our name! By the way...check out dj rican this saturday at
the vault...recent winner of the all latin dj battle!
