Salsa in Bermuda

When
it was time to escape from the every day responsibilities of work, school,
and rehearsals, Mike and I decided getting lost in Bermuda for a while
sounded nice. We were thrilled with the gorgeous ocean view, wide open
skies, and the most beautiful color of aqua blue water which could be
found around nearly ever turn. This small island's history and European
flair were also an enjoyable part of our break from every day. Of course
Yang wouldn't let us out of a week of rehearsal's without assigning
us to check out the local salsa scene.
We checked out two events promoted by www.bermudasalsa.com.
Wednesday night's festivities were held at the Veranda Bar in the elegant
Elbow Beach Hotel. We were met in the lobby by a smiling pair who took
a brief break from dancing to greet us and explain that every cover
paid between now and August also buys a chance to win a trip to the
salsa congress in Puerto Rico. DJ Pepe played great salsa music all
night long (not a single merengue, bachata, or cha cha). The wait staff
was polite and always ready to serve even though we only requested water.
They also carry an extensive supply of cigars, including cubans, but
those must be smoked outside. The only problem with the well cared for
wood floor was an extra table or two. Most impressively, there didn't
seem to be a single beginner in the place and the men were outstyling
the ladies. Their stylization seemed closest to LA style to my untrained
eye. Thursday night at the Splash night club, which is decorated as
well as any place I've seen in Indy or Chicago, the salsa was only interupted
by two cha cha's and many of the same dancers were out again. We didn't
see a lot of night life in Bermuda; it's really a place to get lost
and relax. The salsa scene seemed to be a small community, but a group
of dancers who seemed friendly and eager to dance. If you're a dancer,
salsa will be a nice addition to your beautiful Bermuda escape.
